This gripping novella set in Newford is a cautionary tale about Brenda Perry, who bears deep scars from the loss of her father. Poor body image and low self-esteem lead to the resurgence of Brenda’s eating disorder and a collapse in the structure of her life. Ghosts, water spirits and wraiths all appear in this tale where there are no easy answers—only opportunities to live and fight another day.

I can never recapture the feeling of first arriving in Newford and meeting the people and seeing the sights as a newcomer. However, part of the beauty of Newford is the sense that it has always been there, that de Lint is a reporter who occasionally files stories from a reality stranger and more beautiful than ours. De Lint also manages to keep each new Newford story fresh and captivating because he is so generous and loving in his depiction of the characters. Yes, there are a group of core characters whose stories recur most often, but a city like Newford has so many intriguing people in it, so many diverse stories to tell, so much pain and triumph to chronicle.
— Challenging Destiny
Charles de Lint is the modern master of urban fantasy. Folktale, myth, fairy tale, dreams, urban legend—all of it adds up to pure magic in de Lint's vivid, original world. No one does it better.
— Alice Hoffman
Charles de Lint writes like a magician. He draws out the strange inside our own world, weaving stories that feel more real than we are when we read them. He is, simply put, the best.
— Holly Black
De Lint is probably the finest contemporary author of fantasy
– Booklist, American Library Association
Unlike most fantasy writers who deal with battles between ultimate good and evil, de Lint concentrates on smaller, very personal conflicts. Perhaps this is what makes him accessible to the non-fantasy audience as well as the hard-core fans. Perhaps it’s just damned fine writing.
– Quill & Quire
De Lint’s evocative images, both ordinary and fantastic, jolt the imagination.

It is hard to imagine urban fantasy done with greater skill

The Wishing Well eBook Charles de Lint
Is the wishing well magic, or haunted, or a portal for evil supernatural beings to enter the world? O maybe it's just an old, over-grown well in back of an abandoned motel. For Brenda, it can be any or all of these as she struggles with the obsessions that drive her toward madness. Master story-teller de Lint often teases us with different versions of reality, which in this case is the ambiguous reality seen by a woman in crisis.Product details

The Wishing Well eBook Charles de Lint Reviews
I have read as many of Charles de Lint's books as I've come across over the years. Never read a bad one. This is a very engaging story with only a little bit of "otherworld" thrown in.
This book is , like all of his books. inspiring, uplifting, funny and filled with little mysteries that are always there around us, as long as we are willing to accept the. By accepting them, we lose our blinders and discover missing parts of ourselves.
I have loved his novels since I was young and this short story is just right for a weeks bus commute or a drive to your nearest summer vacation spot.
C. de L. is much better with longer fiction, but this is good for what it is. Always excellent at getting into the heads of his characters.
great read
I don't think Charles de Lint ever wrote a bad book. If he did, he didn't publish it. His very least that I've ever read is still well above "good". This one, not very long, is more Psychology than Fantasy, and it's gripping, because the reader can see at least part of what's coming, and is cheering for the protagonist to figure it out and on the edge of the chair praying for her to figure it out (or for her friends to) before it kills her.
I just finished the "Wishing Well" Charles de Lint is and amazing writer. I love his wonderfully weird style. I have read a few of his books. They give you a different take on life. You should read some of his other books too. This is the first one I have read from the Newfond series. Love it as much as I love his other books.
